Winner of SIT DOWN! competition announced

The winner of SIT DOWN!, the international design contest launched by Istituto Marangoni and Cappellini, has been announced.

The members of the panel, Massimo Zanatta – the Istituto Marangoni School of Design’s School Director, Cristina Morozzi - Director of Education at the Istituto Marangoni School of Design, Giulio Cappellini, Architect, Designer and Art Director at Cappellini, Piero Lissoni, Architect and Designer, Emanuele Farneti, Director at AD, and Sam Baron, Designer and Design Director at Fabrica, carefully assessed the projects uploaded to Istituto Marangoni’s “80 chances to be the one” website, selecting the designs which offered the best interpretation of the contest’s theme.

The panel were unanimous in awarding first prize to Italian Matteo Agati for his project Pagh, a lounge chair that was inspired by the art of meditation, characterised by the typical cross-legged sitting position, incorporating the concepts of lightness and levitation into the form of the chair. Matteo Agati received a scholarship for a Masters in Italian Product Design at the Istituto Marangoni School of Design in Milan, awarded by design firm Cappellini.

In view of the high quality of the projects entered, two further prizes were awarded, along with three special recognitions. An idea by Spanish designer Anton Garcia Seoane was deemed the “best innovative concept around the theme”, and the designer received a 50% scholarship for the Masters in Italian Product Design.

The same prize was awarded to Israel Belmar, another Spanish designer, whose work stood out to the panel as the “best interpretation and translation of the project concept”.

The three special recognitions, awarded to Italian Marco Veroli, Russian Viktoria Mindareva and to Mexican designer Deyanira Carreon, came with a bonus of €5000 off the cost of the Masters in Italian Product Design.

The competition winners will now have the opportunity to train at the Istituto Marangoni School of Design on Via Cerva at the heart of Milan, a location surrounded by some of the biggest names in national and international design.

The SIT DOWN! contest is part of wider programme put together to celebrate talent, through which Istituto Marangoni, which celebrated its 80th birthday in 2015, will award 80 scholarships, offering young international talents the chance to achieve their dream and receive high quality training.
