Design-led buying event Top Drawer – taking place from 17-19th January at London Olympia – has announced that Assemble, winner of last year’s Turner Prize, is joining the show's new talent hub, Spotted, at this edition.
The enterprise runs a regeneration scheme for derelict houses in Toxteth, Liverpool, which includes products by the Granby Workshop, a new social enterprise making handmade products for homes. Set up by Assemble and launched through its nomination for the Turner Prize 2015, all products – including door knobs, mantelpieces, furniture, fabric and tiles – are manufactured using processes which embrace chance, so that each is unique, developing in the hands of the people making it.
Assemble is a multi-disciplinary collective working across architecture, design and art. Founded in 2010 to undertake a single self-built project, Assemble has since delivered a diverse and award-winning body of work, whilst retaining a democratic and co-operative working method that enables built, social and research based work at a variety of scales, both making things and making things happen. Assemble champions a collaborative working practice that blurs the line between client, designer, builder and public. Its involvement in projects covers a broad range of disciplines and interests – underpinned by the belief that a more diverse approach leads to richer results. This year it became the first design practice ever to win the Turner Prize in the UK.
Top Drawer will present a global cross-section of products across its sectors of Home, Gift, Fashion and Craft.
