Mattress Online recognised for tech growth

Rotherham-based Mattress Online landed a double at the recent Northern Tech Awards, placing at 19th in the Top 100 Fastest Growing Tech Companies in the North and 2nd in the Top 15 Fastest Growing Larger Companies.

The independent retailer has long had technology at the forefront of the business, and was one of the first online sellers of mattresses back in 2003, when the company launched its bespoke ecommerce platform from a bedroom.

During the pandemic, Mattress Online saw turnover leap to £37.5m, fuelled by stay-at-home spending on DIY and homeware. Growth was underpinned by the in-house development team, which continually innovates, and found smarter ways to use technology to make the customer experience slicker.

Head of digital Michael Jervis says: “Mattress Online’s ability to be ahead of the game during the pandemic meant that we could continue to provide the smartest technology available to manage the huge increase in sales.

“In 2021 we processed 128,500 orders from 3.1 million web visitors. This could have been overwhelming had it not been for the systems we have in place, so it is fantastic to have been recognised for our performance in the tech realm."

CEO Steve Adams adds: “Tech has always been at the very heart of what we do at Mattress Online. Harnessing that, and having some of the best digital talent in Yorkshire in our team, makes our placing in the lists really rewarding.”

Last year Mattress Online shared plans to acquire and roll out 10 brick-and-mortar stores over the next five years.

Steve continues: “That expansion plan is now well under way, and is bolstered by a development team who are constantly improving our technology, both in terms of the customer facing platform and in streamlining internal processes. The future is looking positive, and I am, as ever, incredibly proud of my entire team.”
