Featuring leading international design brands, Design Shanghai is the premier showcase in China today. More than 150 world-renowned design brands will be presented, 90% of which have never been seen before in China. Design Shanghai will spread over Contemporary, Classic and Collectible halls, with an overall area of 10,000 sq m in the striking, newly-renovated, Russian-style Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Design brands including Magis, Flos, Fritz Hansen, Alessi, Boss Design and HAY are among some of the exhibitors confirmed to date. Design Republic will also be bringing Bocci, Bd Barcelona Design, Classicon, Interni Edition, Moooi and Tom Dixon to the show.
Design Shanghai is the brainchild of Mr Gu, general manager of Shanghai Art Fair. Co-organised with Media 10, the show is also backed by Media 10’s leading international shows, including 100% Design, Clerkenwell Design Week and Ideal Home Show. Having established itself as an industry leader in producing contemporary design events in the UK, Media 10 strives to replicate its success - both in content and design - in China.
Design Shanghai will see an impressive selection of curatorial content from leading Western and Chinese designers. Jaguar will bring Wallpaper* Handmade to China for the first time at Design Shanghai, after touring Milan, London and Miami. There will be five pieces on show - inspired by Jaguar and created by established designers including Fredrikson Stallard, Moritz Waldemeyer, Mathieu Gustafsson, Neri & Hu and Salvatori. Moreover, award-winning galleries Carpenters Workshop, Downtown Francois Laffanour and Jousse Enterprise will be present in the Collectible Hall. Meanwhile, artists from both China and Europe will create art installations all over the show, including Qu Guangci, Kristjana S Williams, Danful and Naihan Li.
In addition, Design Shanghai will host an extensive seminar programme of prolific Western and Eastern designers, meeting for the first time to discuss the future of design. The latest speakers include Isle Crawford, Michael Young, John Makepeace, Lyndon Neri, Rossana Hu and many more. Design Shanghai will also work with Domus Tiandi, Pernod Ricard, Miele and Marquis de Montesquiou to create a series of a unique bar, restaurant and VIP lounge, offering visitors a special design experience.
Based on the concept of Design Shanghai 2014 ‘West Meets East’, the lead creative of a dragon has been unveiled. As a lucky symbol in China, the 'dragon' consists of some of the world's most iconic furniture designs from Cappellini, Vitra, Boca Do Lobo and Fritz Hansen, to name a few. Three individual dragons represent the three halls at the show - Contemporary Design, Classic Design and Collectible Design, creating a unique identity for each section.
Ross Urwin, former creative director at Lane Crawford, and Darrel Best, co-founder of Infrastructure, have joined Design Shanghai to co-spearhead the event, alongside Pearl Lam, Philip Dodd, Tao Song, Guangci Qu and Jessie Gu who have all joined the show’s advisory panel. Ross says: “I have been travelling between London, Hong Kong and Shanghai for years. I have witnessed the rapid development of Shanghai, and I believe Shanghai is the best place to showcase the world’s leading designs. Design Shanghai will be the most exciting design event in 2014!”
Design Shanghai 2014 is sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover. The Collectible Hall is sponsored by Domus Tiandi.
