Design Shanghai 2015 reported over 40,000 visitors. The event, sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover, included a mix of new designs from over 300 participating brands and galleries, as well as engaging installations and a varied programme of events.
This year’s event provided a platform for over 30 Chinese designers and brands, both emerging and established, to exhibit alongside well-established global names such as Vitra, Foscarini, Driade, Seletti, Fritz Hansen, Moroso and Magis. Additionally, limited edition designs were showcased in the Collectible Design Hall, featuring leading galleries from Europe, the US and the Asia Pacific region with a special focus on China.
The event attracted industry professionals from across the design sector as well as the local Shanghai community, providing opportunities for exposure and networking in China – in particular for those making their first appearance, including names such as Richard Brendon, G&D Distribution, Method Studio and The Elliot Collection.
In addition to the design halls, a range of events including a seminar programme filled with international design talents, launch events and parties occurred simultaneously across the four days.
UK-based designers debuted innovative work including Chaircreative, which presented the new Dragon Kre chair, a centrepiece statement that was foundry cast. Method Studio presented John Walker & Sons' Master Blender's Trunks for Johnnie Walker House, while Bertram Whitford, a trained cabinetmaker, launched the Steam Desk and Steam mirrors, made out of English elm using a steam bending technique.
This year marked the launch of the Design Shanghai & AD China Emerging Chinese Designers Platform at Design Shanghai, where ten designers were selected to be presented to a panel of judges and their work to be displayed at the event.
Ross Urwin and Darrel Best, creative directors of Design Shanghai, comment: “The calibre of regional design talent showcased at this year’s Design Shanghai was a testament to both the evolving Chinese aesthetic and the exploration of new philosophies, forms and fabrications."
Lee Newton, CEO of show organiser Media 10, adds: "Design Shanghai 2015 was nothing short of a triumph for Media 10 and all who worked on and participated in the event. We are delighted with increased visitor numbers, a near doubling of the exhibition space and the quality of products, contributors and speakers.
"What pleased us all was the general vibe around the city and the multitude of associated satellite events organised alongside Design Shanghai. The event has enormous potential for growth and the feedback has been overwhelming. Media 10 created something truly special in Shanghai and we are already planning for a bigger event in 2016."
