FISP celebrates 20 years of supporting furniture sustainability

The Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) marked its 20th Anniversary on 7th October with a special event at Furniture Makers' Hall, bringing together scheme members, industry representatives and key stakeholders to celebrate two decades of progress in advancing responsible business practices across the furniture sector.

The event provided an opportunity to reflect on FISP's development since its launch and recognise the contribution made by its members in helping drive environmental and sustainability improvements throughout the industry.

Guests were welcomed by Joanna Knight, chair of the FISP steering committee, who highlighted the scheme's achievements over the past 20 years and thanked members for their continued commitment and support.

A panel featuring some of FISP's longest-standing members shared their experiences of the scheme and reflected on its value to their organisations over the years. The discussion included Fiona Edwards (JPA Workspaces), Lauren Thompson (Orangebox), Ursula Bytnar (Task Systems), Natalie Goodwin (Sealy) and Andy Barham (Premiere Kitchens), who provided insights into how sustainability expectations have evolved and how FISP has helped support their businesses in responding to changing customer, market and regulatory demands.

Their perspectives highlighted the enduring relevance of the scheme and the role it continues to play in helping organisations demonstrate their commitment to responsible business practices.

Looking ahead, John Hubbard, FISP technical lead, and sustainability expert at Fira-International, outlined the opportunities and challenges facing the scheme as it enters its next chapter. Topics included the changing legislative landscape, plans to introduce an associate membership category and opportunities to expand participation within the domestic furniture sector.

Joanna says: "Celebrating 20 years of FISP is a proud milestone. The success of the programme is a reflection of the commitment shown by our members and supporters across the furniture industry. As sustainability continues to evolve, FISP remains focused on helping businesses navigate change, share best practice and demonstrate their commitment to responsible business."

The evening concluded with networking, drinks and canapes, providing attendees with an opportunity to reconnect with industry colleagues and celebrate the achievements of the programme.

"As FISP begins its third decade, the scheme remains committed to supporting furniture businesses in meeting emerging sustainability challenges while continuing to provide a practical framework for continuous improvement and industry collaboration," concludes the team behind it.
