Six young professionals have completed the Young Professionals Industry Experience (YPIE), a unique two-week tour of UK businesses organised by The Furniture Makers' Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry.
The programme is one of the organisation's flagship educational initiatives, giving a select group of professionals a comprehensive understanding of the furniture industry. Over two weeks, participants explored every stage of the supply chain, from design and manufacturing to marketing, compliance, testing, sustainability and retail.
This year's participants were: Charlotte Rumsey, customer experience team manager at Hypnos Beds; Fyn Duncan, a student at Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxford; Dani Mullane, quality technician at Bensons for Beds; Violeta Marcu, account manager at Sleepeezee; Anna Scott, production engineer at MillerKnoll; and Holly Wilkie, account manager at Source by Net.
The group visited 20 companies across the UK, gaining first-hand insight into the breadth of the furniture supply chain. Businesses opened their doors to showcase best practice in design, component sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, customer service, innovation and sustainability.
Participating organisations included Anti Copying in Design (ACID), Blum UK, Designer Contracts, Dreams, Ercol, Ergochair, the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), the Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman, G Plan, Halstock Cabinet Makers, Hypnos, a masterclass with John Makepeace OBE, Miller Knoll, Ocee & Four Design, SATRA, Sylva Foundation, William Hands and Vita Foam.
The programme concluded with a presentation lunch, sponsored by Blum UK, at Furniture Makers' Hall in London on 17th June, where participants shared their reflections with supporters, industry leaders and the companies that had hosted them throughout the experience.
Jessica Alexander, master of The Furniture Makers' Company, says: “The Young Professionals Industry Experience is one of the most rewarding programmes we deliver because it gives talented people the opportunity to see the furniture industry in its entirety. By visiting businesses across the supply chain, participants gain a deeper understanding of the innovation, craftsmanship and collaboration that underpin our sector.
"It has been inspiring to see this year's group embrace every opportunity, ask thoughtful questions and build lasting connections with the people and businesses they met along the way. They represent the future of our industry, and I have no doubt they will go on to make a significant contribution throughout their careers. We are extremely grateful to all the companies that generously opened their doors and helped make this year's programme such a success."
Fyn Duncan comments: "The Young Professionals Industry Experience programme really opened my eyes to the sheer breadth of the furniture industry. As a furnituremaker, I had no idea that Hypnos beds were still hand-stitched, and I hadn't appreciated the scale at which some companies operate, with Halstock creating furniture for billionaire clients.
"The contacts I made through The Furniture Makers' Company and ACID have been invaluable. I am now a freeman of the company, as well as a member and ambassador for ACID through the Young Furniture Makers' Society, and I'll be working closely with both organisations. Meeting John Makepeace was incredibly inspiring too. He's one of Britain's most influential designer-makers and someone I've admired for a long time."
Anna Scott comments: "The programme was a unique experience where I not only learned a great deal but also made valuable connections with people from across the industry. My personal highlights were visiting Blum's fully automated racking system and seeing the blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern automation at Ercol.
"It's difficult to narrow everything I learned down to a single takeaway because there were so many valuable insights throughout the programme. However, I'll be taking a great deal back into my role, particularly around sustainability initiatives and project management approaches that I saw in practice. The experience has given me fresh ideas and perspectives that I hope to apply in my own work."
Charlotte Rumsey says: "I found the Young Professionals Industry Experience to be a unique and rewarding opportunity, and I'm so glad I had the chance to take part. Every company we visited was different, but they all shared the same commitment to quality and craftsmanship that sits at the heart of the furniture industry. I particularly valued the opportunity to learn, grow both personally and professionally, and gain knowledge that I can take back into my role."
Dani Mullane comments: "I found the Young Professionals Industry Experience incredibly insightful and informative. It was a fantastic opportunity to understand the important role every department plays in ensuring product quality, colleague wellbeing and customer satisfaction.
"Learning about the industry as a whole has given me an even greater appreciation of the innovation that goes into designing and manufacturing high-quality products, while also highlighting the impressive sustainability initiatives and future roadmaps being developed across the sector.
"Taking part in YPIE has benefited me both professionally and personally. I've gained a greater understanding of the role we all play as an industry in reducing the amount of furniture sent to landfill, from the materials used in manufacturing through to quality control processes that ensure products are built to last.
"On a personal level, the experience has given me the confidence to ask questions, contribute ideas and explore new career opportunities within my company. I'm incredibly grateful to my employer for putting me forward and to the amazing group I shared the experience with. I look forward to putting everything I've learned into practice."
