£100,000 revamp for Cookes Furniture

Cookes Furniture, a long-standing furniture business which has been based in Goosemoor Lane, Birmingham for more than 65 years, is to undergo a major £100,000 refurbishment as it looks to the future with a new-look store. Builders will move in at the end of the month as work begins to redesign their first floor.

The family business, which was started by Edward Cooke just after the Second World War, is holding a refurbishment sale this month as they clear space ready for the work to get under way.

James Pike, MD, said: “We are moving with the times and are all very excited about the changes as we have never done anything like this before in the history of the company. The first floor of our store will be redesigned with a flowing central walkway and designated display studios, for brands such as Natuzzi, Editions, Collins and Hayes and the new Cookes Collection furniture range and Homecomforts department.”

The work to revamp the store is due to start on 30th September.

Vanessa Hoe, marketing director, said: “We envisage that the work will take around three weeks and will be finished by the end of October. The store will not be closed while the work is carried out and people can still have access to Edward’s Restaurant. We feel it is important that we continue to invest in the store, ensuring we continure to inspire and delight our customers.

“The refurbishment coincides with the launch of our own furniture range, The Cookes Collection, and also finishing touches for the home in our Homecomforts department. We want to reinforce that there is something for everyone here, from traditional furniture to our contemporary and modern styles which will be housed in our new-look first floor. This work is very much about the future and building a business that will be strong and healthy for the fourth generation of the Cooke family to take over.”

Founder Edward Cooke worked closely with his son Graham for decades building a store that is well known for its customer service. Now Graham’s three daughters Michelle, Vanessa and Jennifer are helping to run the business along with two of their husbands – MD James Pike and logistics director Andrew Davies.
