Husband and wife retail entrepreneurs Jodi and Carrina Skelton have taken ownership of longstanding furniture and lifestyle goods wholesaler, Ancient Mariner.
Hunter Imports Ltd, trading as Ancient Mariner, was formed in 2024 following years of a professional and personal relationship between the Skeltons and original owner James Ellis and his family.
The Ellis’ had supplied Uneeka.home, Jodi’s other business venture, for over 10 years.
"James has been a supplier for many years," explains Jodi. "We’ve always been impressed by the selection of high-quality and unique pieces he had to offer. When we heard James wanted to step back from the business and focus on his family and other projects, we saw the opportunity to keep this great business trading."
With over 20 years in the ethical retail industry, Jodi’s extensive expertise will be key to sourcing unique items to entice retailers looking for something a little different, states the business – while Carrina’s background in communication and management promises "a smooth, first-class service".
The imports, predominantly from Indonesia and India, are handcrafted in small fair-trade factories, states Hunter Imports, with items ranging from solid wooden tables, chairs and cabinets to decorative lifestyle items and one-off vintage pieces.
The duo was able to travel with their children earlier this year to meet the traders firsthand and start new relationships.
"It was such a fantastic experience," says Carrina. "It’s unbelievable to think in just three months we went from chatting over a drink in Yogyakarta to receiving our first shipment in our Cornish warehouse."
The Skeltons aim to keep it a family business, "ensuring excellent, efficient and personal service, supplying customers with good-quality products at a great value".
Ancient Mariner Imports is exhibiting at this year's Autumn Fair, taking place from 1st-4th September at the NEC Birmingham.
