John Lewis clearance sees some impressive sales

John Lewis' first full week of clearance got off to a bumper start, with sales up 9.6% on last year. Customers took advantage of the longer Christmas holiday to go shopping.

There was a robust performance from shops which benefited from the additional weekday before the New Year holiday. New format shops were very much to the fore in terms of percentage growth while it was Welwyn that delivered the stand-out performance among the full-line shops.

This impressive first clearance week led to another very busy week for online with sales up 17% year-on-year and Click & collect 37% ahead of last year.

Home benefited from impressive clearance sales, with growth of 9.5% year-on-year with record levels of trade from reduced and Special Buy products. Also performing well within our Home directorate were Textiles and Carpets, up 11%, and Furniture, up 9% with good sell through of clearance product.
