ScS initiative saves one million plastic bottles from the seas

ScS is celebrating an impressive sustainability milestone after saving one million plastic bottles from the oceans through sales of SpringBond underlay.

According to research led by Science magazine, more than 8 million tons of plastic bottles end up in the oceans each year and, by 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.

With each underlay roll saving 180 plastic bottles (500ml), the sofa and carpet specialist reached the one million mark at the beginning of February, having sold over 5500 rolls.

The retailer, based in Sunderland, is now aiming to double this total and reach two million bottles by the end of the summer, one year after launching the product (which is manufactured by TexFelt).

This campaign has also involved the company switching all of its stores to renewable energy – a feat that was accomplished last April.

In the same year, ScS achieved Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) certification, and had 100% of its laminate flooring range certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Jon Whitfield, head of flooring buying at ScS, says: “SpringBond is a fantastic product that benefits both our customers and the planet, so we would like to say a massive thank you to our customers that have bought the underlay over the last year. We have a responsibility to look after the environment and we take this very seriously. It’s also important that it doesn’t cost the earth to save the earth, so I’m really proud that we’ve been able to bring this brilliant eco-friendly product to customers at an affordable price.

“It’s now time to build on this success and set our sights on even more ambitious targets. We’re on track to hit the two million milestone later this year, and that will be a tremendous testament to both our staff and customers.”
