BDO reports positive retail performance in mid-January

Across the week ended 19th January 2025, total LFL retail sales jumped by +8.60%, from a base of +1.21% for the same week last year, growing on the back of positive store and non-store trade, reports BDO.

The improvement in footfall this week was also reflected in the positive sales results recorded by all retail segments in brick-and-mortar venues. Non-store, meanwhile, recorded a third consecutive week of double-digit growth.

Total in-store LFL sales grew by +4.38% from a base of -7.29%. Total non-store LFL sales jumped by +12.63% from a positive base of +7.25% for the same week last year.

The week’s weather was relatively settled, marked by mild and dry conditions, clear spells, and sunshine for some, while northern areas saw patchy drizzles. The UK saw sub-zero conditions during the same week last year as snow covered the north while gusts caused by Storm Isha swept across the country.

Overall footfall climbed +2.5%, driven by positive foot traffic across all tracked categories. High street footfall rose by +3.8%, shopping centres saw growth of +1.7%, and retail parks saw a +0.6% increase.

Total homewares LFL sales increased by +0.27% this week from a base of -7.23% for the same week last year, marking the category’s eighth consecutive positive result. Store sales rose by +3.27% from a poor base of -13.79% for the same week last year, indicating the category’s third positive result in the last four weeks.
