Bedmaker lands green manufacturing accolade

Leeds-based bedmaker Harrison Spinks has been named Green/Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year at a regional awards ceremony.

The company beat four other businesses to win the accolade at Insider’s Made in Yorkshire Awards. Now in its sixth year, the annual excellence awards celebrates the best in regional manufacturing, and judges singled out the company’s use of 100% natural fillings and its farm where it grows the hemp and flax used in its mattresses.

Harrison Spinks' MD Simon Spinks says: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award – sustainability is at the very heart of our business, which is why we are the most vertically integrated bed manufacturer in the world.

“We design and manufacture here, we build our own machinery here, we draw our own wire for our unique spring technology here, and we even grow our own natural fillings on a farm we own in Yorkshire. This contributes to reductions in transport miles and fuel costs in all aspects of production and delivery.

“As well as benefitting production and sustainability, our innovations in spring design and mattress fillings mean we can create the most comfortable and luxurious sleep experiences for our customers.”

Other finalists in the Green/Sustainable Manufacturer Award category at Insider’s Made in Yorkshire Awards were BIDBI, Texfelt, Moss Valley Fine Meats and The Shire Bed Company.

Last month Harrison Spinks announced 22 new jobs with a £1.8m investment in a new wire drawing facility on British Steel’s site in Scunthorpe – the company already employs over 600 people at its facilities in Leeds.
