New Designers, the exhibition for emerging design, has revealed the future of design in the 2013 line-up for One Year On. Following a rigorous selection process, this highly-anticipated part of the exhibition will showcase a group of talented designers who are in their first year of business, giving visitors the chance to see and buy the trends of the future before they hit the high street.
Joanna Feeley, director of Trend Bible, says: "One Year On is a brilliant reflection of the trends we’re seeing for 2014 and is a must for retailers and shoppers alike. In 2014, there will be a focus on bold exaggerated shapes. We’re also seeing a trend for products that have a tactile quality and contrast natural with synthetic, such Leigh Cameron's furniture which blends wood with concrete."
Curated by designer Jethro Macey, One Year On brings together products that are tipped to be the iconic designs of the future. The designers are chosen to take part on the strength of their entrepreneurial flair and the exceptional quality of their work. This year’s line-up includes everything from taxidermy-inspired ceramics and interior products featuring striking insect silhouettes, to unisex brooches based on Mexican Calvary insignia and hand spun yarn from a collective of spinners.
One Year On runs across Part 1 and Part 2 of New Designers, featuring creative disciplines ranging from jewellery, precious metalwork, ceramics and glass to fashion and textiles, furniture, lighting, interior products and illustration.
Highlights from One Year On include:
Hugh Leader-Williams: a triple award winner at New Designers 2012, Hugh creates tables and stools using magnets to attach powder-coated spun steel tops to ash frames, and unique copper bowls, imprinted with a wood grain texture;
The Concrete Foundation: multi-disciplinary maker Leigh Cameron won the Palladium Alliance jewellery design competition and worked with Vivienne Westwood. He uses stark architectural designs to create furniture and jewellery;
Sheep of Steel: a collective of spinners who create their own experimental, contemporary ranges of hand spun yarn;
Drew Markou: having trained as a landscape architect, Andrew Markou now applies this aesthetic to jewellery and objects made out of concrete, steel and other landscaping materials;
Brittany Delany Ceramics: combining taxidermy techniques with precious metals stitched into porcelain, Brittany creates unique pieces of tableware;
Grace Hamilton Contemporary Jewellery: initially inspired by a trip to Billingsgate fish market, Grace Hamilton makes handcrafted innovative neckpieces using traditional crochet and knotting techniques.
Further product highlights will include families of lights created using the ancient technique of boiling leather, light-hearted watercolour illustration, hand-drawn and digital graphic design, and jewellery produced using the methods and materials of blacksmiths.
Now celebrating its 28th edition, New Designers 2013 will bring together over 3,000 of the UK’s most talented and innovative design graduates, all under one roof. Part 1 will be held from 26-29th June, with the awards preview 26th June, and Part 2 will be from 03rd–06th July, with the awards preview on 3rd July. The exhibition will be held at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London. Tickets are now on sale.
