Furniture News celebrates reaching its 300th issue this month – as well as 30 years of business for its publisher, Gearing Media Group.
A special retrospective in the March issue explores how the industry has changed in that time, and how the magazine has continually evolved to better serve it – as well as enjoying a few highlights from Furniture News’ colouful past.
Furniture News evolved from an entrepreneurial streak in company founder and owner Nigel Gearing, who, in 1984, chose to seize upon the opportunities inherent in the emerging UK pine trade by starting his own publishing house to work alongside it. The first issue of Pine News International was published in 1986, and the newspaper quickly became the title of choice for this burgeoning sector.
In 2001, it was decided that the magazine would undergo a transformation to better reflect increasing market diversity, and Pine News became Furniture News – taking in the wider upholstery, beds and accessories markets alongside its well-established cabinet furniture offering.
Today, Furniture News is a leader in print and online, its base of loyal readers growing every month. Its publisher – previously Nigel Gearing Ltd, now Gearing Media Group – owns a stable of magazines dedicated to furniture (including Furniture Production and Hospitality Interiors), and boasts the strongest partnership network in the UK trade.
