James Hudson, commercial director at Gallery Direct, has been training hard on the hills of Devon ahead of a 400km, four-day charity bike ride organised by Help for Heroes, taking place from 24-29th June.
The Big Battlefield Bike Ride will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and Armed Forces Day. James, who was part of the 5th Battalion Royal Green Jackets Reserves for seven years, has launched a fundraising campaign which aims to raise £3000 for the charity.
“I've had a small insight into the life of the regular army, and realise the struggles some soldiers have after leaving service.
"I’ve also been in the furniture industry for 41 years now, and a member of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers – which itself supports the 2nd Rifles Battalion – for 27 of them.
"This is an ideal opportunity to help raise funds for such a worthy charity, whilst enjoying cycling with like-minded people and good friends.”
The ride starts in Sainte-Mere-Eglise in northern France, stopping at D-Day beaches Omaha, Gold and Juno. It then follows the path of British expeditionary forces by exploring Bayeux, Lisieux and Bernay, concluding in Paris on Armed Forces Day.
"I know times are tough, but would be delighted if members of our great industry could help me raise money for the heroes who have given so much for our country," continues James, who has so far raised around £2100, but is now looking for companies and individuals that could help him reach towards the £5000 mark."
James concludes: “I will be paying all my own travel costs, and therefore 100% of the donations that I receive will go directly to the charity.
"I’m really excited about the challenge, and looking forward to getting on my bike for the French tour!”
