Heli-Beds pair take on Rust Box Rally in aid of Mencap

Best friends since the age of six, Steve Marr, MD of Heli-Beds (Swindon) and Dan Phillips are putting their 48-year friendship to the test as they take on the Rust Box Rally in aid of Mencap, in a car bought for just £450.

Starting in England on 26th September, the pair will join around 30 teams on a seven-days, seven-country adventure through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany, finishing in Munich before making the journey home.

The challenge is to buy a car for under £750, reach a series of destinations and complete challenges along the way. Steve and Dan say they are expecting "breakdowns, navigation challenges, roadside repairs and plenty of moments when they’ll be hoping their trusty old car makes it to the next checkpoint".

When asked what will he would miss the most while away, Steve promptly replied, "My car and my bed!"

The pair are raising money for Mencap, a charity close to their hearts, in memory of Dan’s late foster sister, Hayley. They say their team name – Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow – reflects both the fun and the personal reason behind their challenge.

Proudly supporting the pair as main sponsor is Heli-Beds of Swindon (Beds by Bedtime). Having traded for 35 years, the retailer says it is proud to support Steve and Dan as they raise both money and awareness for Mencap.

"Every donation, however large or small, will help turn this ambitious road trip into something genuinely meaningful," they say.
