Judges announced for student workspace design competition

The judges have been announced for a student design competition which has challenged undergraduates to share their ideas for a workspace of the future.

Run by the Furniture Industry Research Association and sponsored by Morgan, the judges for the FUTURE@WORK competition will shortlist five entries which will be displayed at Morgan’s Clerkenwell showroom throughout Clerkenwell Design Week. Winners will be announced in June 2015.

The winner of first prize will receive £3000, second prize will be £1000 and third prize £500. Another £500 will be awarded to the winner of the public vote which will take place in the Morgan showroom and online until the end of May.

The panel of five judges have been confirmed as:
Dr Peter Beele – Furniture Industry Research Association
Katerina McMahon – Design Director, Morgan
Ross Hunter – Director, Graven Images
Mick Jordan – Editor, Mix Interiors
Stephen Perkins – Director of International Research + Design, Herman Miller

An event on Tuesday 19th May 2015, between 10 and 11:30am, will provide an opportunity to speak to the students and FIRA’s chief ergonomist, Levent Çaglar, will give a short presentation which takes a look at how offices have changed over the years and what we could see in the future.

Dr Peter Beele, council member for the Furniture Industry Research Association, says: “We wanted to challenge students to use their imagination, foresight and knowledge of criteria that may impact on the future work environment. We wanted to know their vision of how workspaces will look twenty five years into the future. I am thrilled that we have such a great range of design industry experts to help in what will no doubt be a difficult job of selecting the winning designs.”

The brief outlines that design concepts should fall into one of three categories – personal space, small group space or novel product design. Applicants are urged to consider sustainability in its broadest sense, the impact of technology and social criteria.

The competition was open to all undergraduate students studying on furniture, design or architecture related courses in a UK university.
