JYSK to open first 'dark store' warehouse in Dublin next month

JYSK is planning to introduce a 'dark store' logistics concept comprising smaller warehouses, in order to help fulfil its “Seamless and Closer to customer” strategy.

The first two will open in Ireland and Morocco, and promise to help JYSK become more competitive and offer a faster and more reliable delivery to customers in selected countries.

The first one will open in Dublin next month, with a second opening planned in Casablanca, Morocco, in the spring.

“When we are present in a country, and we want to shorten the delivery time, a dark store is a great option for us," says Ole Thomsen, EVP, logistics at JYSK. "This helps us to attract new customers and create a more seamless experience.”

Smaller than a DC, a so-called ‘dark store’ is a smaller warehouse with racking and shelves only, for online shopping. It will house a full assortment from stores and more, ready to be delivered directly to households.

The small warehouses will be replenished from one of the 10 large DCs that JYSK already has across Europe – "a dark store can, in some cases, be a great supplement to significantly reduce the lead time for online delivery", JYSK explains.

The Dublin dark store covers around 8000 sqm. So far, customers and stores in Ireland and the UK have received their deliveries directly from the DC in Denmark. From November on, online customers will receive their deliveries from the dark store.

“We will be able to significantly reduce our lead time, which will bring us even closer to customers," says Roni Tuominen, country director for JYSK United Kingdom & Ireland. "This is very important to continue our growth in Ireland, and will also create new jobs.”
