NBF participates in charity conference

The National Bed Federation (NBF) is to take part in The Sleep Charity’s first online conference for parents and professionals working with children and young people in the Lincolnshire area.

The charity is an NBF partner organisation, following the merger last summer of The Sleep Council and The Sleep Charity.

NBF executive director Jessica Alexander (pictured) will talk about the importance of a good bed to children and young people when she takes part in the Sleep Well Lincolnshire event. Celebrating World Sleep Day, the live virtual conference is being held on Friday (March 19th 10am-3.30pm) and is already fully booked, with 100 parents and professionals taking part.

Aiming to explore how early intervention sleep support helps children, young people and their families, a selection of speakers will cover topics ranging from the importance of sleep hygiene to teen sleep, how diet impacts on children and young people's sleep, and the nature of dreaming.

Keynote speaker will be Dr Simon Durrant, whose positions include director of the Lincoln Sleep Research Centre and treasurer of the British Sleep Society. His talk will look at how much sleep people need, and what happens when they do not get enough. Also, Nathalie Winn from Waitrose will talk about how diet impacts on children and young people's sleep.

Lisa Artis, who moved from the NBF to The Sleep Charity as part of the merger, will also be making a presentation, as will the charity’s CEO Vicki Dawson.

Says Vicki: “We’re incredibly excited to be holding our first virtual conference, which has generated an enormous amount of interest among both parents and professionals. As well as a cracking line-up of speakers, we’ll be talking about the success of our Teen Sleep Hub and Young Person’s Journal, plus how the charity uses its successful behavioural approach to sleep in its one-to-one clinics, along with the importance of the bedroom environment.

“We’re particularly pleased that the NBF, which is providing financial backing for the charity during the first two years of the merger, is being represented on the panel. Jessica has a wealth of knowledge and experience on the subject of beds and sleep so we know that her presentation will bring added wisdom to the day.”

Jessica, who is also on the charity’s newly formed advisory board, adds: “The two organisations have been working closely together to raise the profile of the importance of sleep, so we are delighted that the conference has proved a sell-out event. Going forward, we look forward to working with the charity on many of the other new initiatives we know they have lined up.”
