New Designers Part 1 award winners announced

On Thursday 27 June, New Designers Associate prizes were awarded to four of the best graduate designers exhibiting part in Part 1 of New Designers – the exhibition for emerging design, which features over 3000 graduate designers across two parts.

Director of New Designers Isobel Dennis says: "The Associate Prize programme is a very important part of the show which is run in addition to the New Designers Awards. The prizes are presented on the public opening days to further recognise the creative talents of existing graduates."

The Worshipful Company of Weavers Prize of £1000 was awarded to Lily Emma Tennant from Loughborough University for her work Passmenterie Collection, which utilises the traditional skills of weaving to produce woven trims. The judges said: “Lily’s collection of decorative narrow fabrics is innovative and beautifully constructed. She has mastered many techniques which show outstanding creativity.”

The Clothworkers’ Company Prize of £1000 was awarded to Marie Stenton from University of Leeds for her work The Sinner’s Prayer. She says: “Winning this award has been an unbelievable experience. I have always dreamed of starting my own fashion label and this has really helped to make things happen. I could not be more grateful for this amazing opportunity. Thank you to all the lovely judges from The Clothworkers’ Company.”

The Contemporary Glass Society Prize of £250, a £100 voucher for Warm Glass, a photographic session with Simon Bruntneil and a membership and promotion package, went to Juli Bolaños-Durman from Edinburgh College of Art for her work Mix and Match Series.

The Christy’s Carpets Prize of £250 was given to Kim Norrie from Robert Gordon Gray’s School of Art for her work Making Spaces in Association with Places. The judges said: “Kim oozes energy, enthusiasm and passion – this is clearly evident in her work. Kim demonstrates her ability to translate development concepts into final pieces – resulting in stunning fabrics."
