New members for furniture sustainability scheme

A sustainability scheme recognised as the environmental benchmark for the furniture industry, welcomes two new members to the scheme.

To achieve membership of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP), an organisation must demonstrate its commitment to managing and improving sustainability on an ongoing basis. FISP, which is independently audited by FIRA International, was launched ten years ago to support and promote sustainable development in the furniture industry. It has since become one of the premier sustainability schemes for furniture in the UK.

The new members are Interstuhl, a designer and manufacturer of office seating based in Germany, and Task Systems Limited, a designer and manufacturer of office furniture based in London.

Stuart Cochrane, FIRA’s sustainability consultant, says: “With many contracts listing sustainability as a requirement for all new furniture purchases, and statistics demonstrating that consumers are becoming more environmentally aware, FISP membership demonstrates a company’s sustainability credentials through independent verification. As well as protecting the environment there are many benefits of becoming a FISP member, including potential cost savings by reducing waste and saving energy.

“We are really pleased that Interstuhl and Task Systems Limited have achieved FISP membership, demonstrating that sustainable development is at the core of their business ethos. We look forward to working alongside them in the future.”

FISP focuses on a variety of sustainability issues across a company including purchasing, end of life management, transportation, waste and energy management. Membership is assessed on an annual basis and members are required to demonstrate their commitment to managing and improving sustainability.

FISP has over 75 members internationally, including Magnet, Moores Furniture Group, Premiere Kitchens, Sealy UK and Senator International.
