The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, has presented Peter Keen with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the British bed and furniture industry.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to a leader who has devoted their life to the furtherment of the furnishing industry and left an indelible mark on the trade.
Peter was presented the award by the Lord Mayor, the Rt Honourable Alderman Alastair King DL, and Debbie Johnson, the newly installed master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, at Mansion House, London on Monday.
Peter Keen, the chairman of British bedmaker Hypnos, has been a leading figure in the industry for over 50 years. Inheriting the family business in his early 30s, Peter’s entrepreneurial vision and passion for sleep products helped transform Hypnos into a £50m turnover brand, known worldwide for its quality, innovation and sustainability.
Instrumental in forging strong relationships with royal households and the hospitality sector, Peter also served on industry boards including Contract Interiors UK, the National Bed Federation (president), and the British Furniture Association (chairman), as well as being a past master of The Furniture Makers’ Company. His leadership has shaped key initiatives, from establishing the annual Bed Show to championing mattress recycling and industry standards.
Debbie Johnson says: “Peter’s legacy within the furnishing world is profound. His charisma and enduring commitment to excellence have left an unmistakable mark. Beyond business success, Peter’s investment in people, from suppliers to apprentices, has helped define Hypnos’ family-oriented culture. We are delighted to honour him with this Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Peter’s impact goes far beyond the boardroom. A long-standing advocate for charitable causes and conservation in Buckinghamshire, Peter has dedicated time and energy to preserving the area’s furnituremaking heritage and natural beauty.
Peter says: “I’m incredibly honoured to receive this award from The Furniture Makers’ Company. I’ve had the privilege of working with so many wonderful people in an industry I love. I’m proud of the legacy we’ve built at Hypnos and know the future is in safe hands.”
