Ian Philp, MD of retailer Gillies of Broughty Ferry, based in the North East of Scotland, has retired from the role after serving more than 25 years as MD.
Ian is stepping down as MD as part of the company’s succession strategy, but will continue to be a director of the company, providing support to the board – particularly on the flooring side of the business.
Ian comments: “Gillies has a long pedigree in business stretching back to 1895, with the company still owned by the direct descendants of the founder, and I am proud to have guided the company during my time at the helm, including facilitating the younger generation of my family to take up senior roles in the company, carrying on the historic link to the establishment of the business.”
Gillies has appointed Tom Rodgers to take over as MD. Tom has served as the company’s FD for the last nine years, having joined the board of directors in 2016. He is a chartered accountant, and prior to joining the company, he had a successful career as a partner in a professional accountancy practice where he gained a wide range of business experience advising and supporting a diverse client base.
Euan Webster, chairman, comments: “Under Ian’s time as MD the business has expanded considerably, going from two main stores at the start of his tenure to the current five main stores. Under his guidance the company has grown its turnover and its headcount, performed well consistently, and maintained a sound financial base which has allowed the business to flourish.
"Tom’s knowledge and experience of the business gained whilst FD will provide a solid foundation for him in taking on the role of MD, and the company has a long-established and talented board of directors with whom Tom has worked which will assist in a smooth transition for the company in this period of change.”
Tom comments: “I am pleased to be taking on the role of MD, and the opportunities and challenges that this may bring. Having worked alongside Ian for many years I applaud the commitment and effort that he has invested in the role of MD to make Gillies the successful company that it is. I hope that under my direction the board of directors can continue to deliver a successful outcome for the company, our people and our customers.”
