Steinhoff UK Beds donates to BBC's DIY SOS

Steinhoff UK Beds has donated a number of Myer’s beds to a Bristolian family in need as part of the BBC One Series DIY SOS: The Big Build.

Completely relying on the support and generosity of the local community of tradesmen and suppliers, Nick Knowles and his team have successfully rebuilt the home and lives of the deserving family from Hartcliffe, Bristol in just nine days.

Ryan was just nineteen when his life took a turn for the worse, ripping his and his family’s world apart. With doctors discovering a blocked ventricle in his brain, Ryan had a drain inserted to relieve the pressure but as the sedation wore off, Ryan did not wake up and he remained in a coma for six months.

After another operation which involved putting in a stent to relieve the pressure, instead of a drain, Ryan became more stable. However after eight months on the intensive care ward in Bristol, he was unable to go to the rehabilitation ward in Bristol because he was permanently on ventilation.

This meant he was moved to a rehabilitation ward in Gloucester, a two hour public transport journey from the family home and unfortunately where he has remained for the last three and a half years.

House adaptations plus a downstairs extension with all the bespoke care provisions that Ryan needed was carried out by the DIY SOS Team and all the volunteers from 28th March to 6th April 2017. This meant that for the first time in over four years the family were able to bring Ryan home permanently, without which he would have remained in hospital.

Paul Little, Steinhoff UK Beds sales director, says: “We were delighted to assist in donating Myer’s beds to help bring Ryan home and create a better living space for him and his deserving family. Thanks to the donations from us and other companies, along with the hard work and dedication from all the volunteers who helped, the Big Build in Bristol was a great success.

“Ultimately all the family have wanted from the beginning was to be reunited once again and we are so pleased to have been able to play a part in this life changing transformation."
