Students to design future workspace

A student design competition, run by the Furniture Industry Research Association and sponsored by Morgan, is a chance for undergraduates to win a share of the £5000 prize fund by putting forward ideas for their workspace of the future.

The competition, FUTURE@WORK, aims to challenge students to use their imagination, foresight and knowledge of criteria that may impact on the future work environment.

“Employment dynamics are rapidly evolving and workspaces twenty five years into the future will look very different to those of the present.” says Dr Peter Beele, council member for the Furniture Industry Research Association.

The brief outlines that design concepts should fall into one of three categories: personal space, small group space or novel product design. Applicants are urged to consider sustainability in its broadest sense, the impact of technology and social criteria.

Peter continued: “FUTURE@WORK is the first national student design competition run by the Furniture Industry Research Association and celebrates 65 years since the inception of the organisation. The competition has been sponsored by Morgan and we are delighted to be working with them to find high quality, innovative and exciting new workspace design concepts.”

Katerina McMahon, design director at Morgan, says: “We are keen to support Britain’s young design talent as it underpins our industry’s future and are delighted to be involved with this exciting project. The brief for the competition is deliberately imprecise to encourage creativity, so we are really looking forward to seeing the competition entries from the design industry’s future workforce.”

The competition is open to all undergraduate students studying on furniture, design or architecture related courses in a UK university. Shortlisted entries will be displayed in Morgan’s showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week and the winners will be announced in June 2015.
