The Wycombe Furniture Forum (WFF) has announced that it will cease operations after more than two years of work to establish a collaborative organisation supporting the High Wycombe furniture manufacturing sector.
Established as a volunteer-led initiative, WFF evolved from an idea discussed between representatives of industry, education and local government into a formally constituted society. During its development the organisation created an advisory board, appointed a 10-member committee, established an operational team, launched a website, introduced its monthly Voice newsletter and developed a growing database of around 250 contacts representing businesses employing approximately 1,000 people across the local furniture sector.
Despite this progress, the forum has concluded that it has been unable to achieve the level of industry engagement needed to become sustainable.
The decision follows an extensive review of the organisation's activities and the challenges it has encountered since its formation. Among the most significant factors was limited participation from the local furniture industry, it says: "Although there are nearly 50 practising furniture manufacturing businesses in the High Wycombe area, only four became members of the forum.
"Committee participation was also inconsistent, while day-to-day operations increasingly relied on just five active volunteers. A survey conducted to identify industry priorities attracted responses from only 10 of 30 manufacturers contacted. The findings suggested that larger businesses generally did not perceive a need for the forum's services, while smaller manufacturers showed greater interest but not at a level sufficient to sustain the organisation."
The forum also cited the absence of new volunteers and succession planning as a major concern, with no individuals identified to strengthen or replace the existing operational team. WFF says it believes the experience reflects a wider challenge facing the furniture sector, where collaborative working and membership of representative organisations remain relatively low, and notes that participation in national industry bodies is similarly limited across the region.
The organisation also highlighted structural challenges affecting the wider furniture ecosystem: "Student numbers on furniture courses at Buckinghamshire New University remain very low, while delays to the development of Buckinghamshire College Group's new High Wycombe campus have postponed opportunities for closer engagement with education providers. Although Bucks Business First supported the forum's objectives, furniture manufacturing is not identified as a priority sector within Buckinghamshire Council's economic development strategy, limiting opportunities for targeted support.
"National engagement also proved difficult, with the British Furniture Association being the only national organisation to establish an active working relationship with WFF."
The forum was originally created through collaboration between the founders of High Wycombe Life magazine and WFF, inspired by a shared ambition to build on High Wycombe's internationally recognised furniture-making heritage. Its vision was to create a partnership between industry, education and local government that would strengthen skills, promote careers and encourage long-term growth within the sector.
"While WFF maintains that this collaborative economic development model remains valid, it believes successful delivery requires at least one committed lead partner prepared to invest significant resources," it concludes. "In High Wycombe, that level of leadership did not emerge from industry, education or the public sector."
Reflecting on the decision, the forum says that while it is disappointed to close, it remains proud of what was achieved by a small group of volunteers and hopes its experience may inform future initiatives aimed at supporting furniture manufacturing in High Wycombe and other traditional manufacturing communities.
