Getting comfortable can now really last a lifetime, says the trading arm of The Salvation Army, which is calling on businesses to donate their damaged, end-of-line and showroom furniture stock to be upcycled and given a new home.
In a bid to give old furniture a new lease of life, SATCoL (Salvation Army Trading Company) has debuted its Furniture Reuse scheme. The initiative will see businesses donate excess or pre-loved furniture to be upcycled and then housed in The Salvation Army’s 240 charity stores across the country for resale.
Once the repurposed pieces find a new home, the profit that SATCoL receives will be given to The Salvation Army to continue to support the work it does across the UK, providing specialist support for survivors and potential victims of modern slavery, shelter for those experiencing homelessness, and more.
Prolonging the lifespan of furniture is no small feat. According to a recent WRAP study, 1.6 million tonnes of ‘bulky’ waste – 42% of which is furniture, the equivalent of 670,000 tonnes – is disposed of by households in the UK annually and sent to landfill. By taking part in SATCoL’s Furniture Reuse scheme, businesses can work to actively become part of the solution to divert used furniture away from disposal.
As the largest charity-owned textile collector in the UK, each year, SATCoL diverts over 250 million items to good uses, including over 62,000 tonnes of textiles. "By partnering with SATCoL, brands can fulfil their corporate social responsibility and lessen their environmental impact by extending the useful life of products," states the trading company.
