Investing in employee happiness and motivation doesn't just feel good – it demonstrably boosts performance, loyalty, and long-term business success, writes Steve Pickering, the ‘unorthodox’ CEO of independent bed retail chain Sussex Beds. But are you measuring your team's happiness?
We've just introduced a monthly survey to do exactly that. This simple one-question survey asks: "On a scale of 1-10, how likely are you to recommend us as a place to work?"
Team members also have the option to leave anonymous comments.
This approach empowers our people to express genuine feedback – both positive and constructive – without fear of recrimination. It provides us with a monthly team NPS measurement to track collective sentiment as we grow and evolve. It has become one of my key metrics for measuring progress towards making our business a truly exceptional place to work.
The initial results are revealing – 48% team participation, with an average score of 8.1 and an NPS of 31, a solid foundation that gives us clear room to build upon. More valuable still were the candid insights into the real issues and emotions currently circulating amongst our teams.
Do you measure your team's happiness? How frequently? What question(s) have you found most effective in gauging workplace satisfaction?
