Austrian design duo launches furniture collection in the UK

Inspired by the stripped back design of alpine chalets, Peter Daniel and Nicole Horn, the two Viennese designers behind stuben21, set about creating a bespoke furniture collection that celebrates clean forms free from ornamentation. The result is an eye-catching collection that is functional, comfortable and stylish.

After 11 years in Austria, stuben21 is launching in the UK in Spring 2014, with the Rockwood showroom set to open in Surrey in Autumn 2014 in collaboration with British developer Steve Mills.

What stands out in the collection is a commitment to traditional materials and techniques. The powerful aesthetic of stuben21 furniture stems from the combination of solid wood (oiled) and pearl-blasted (matte) stainless steel. The wood (stone pine, maple, walnut, cherry, oak and beech) is sourced from sustainable Austrian forests and each piece is produced in small, family owned factories in Austria.

In this collection, function takes centre stage – from the stainless steel footrests to the subtly positioned drawers, the pieces are made to be used and serve the comfort of the user. The chess table is a prime example of the collection’s intelligent design – fuss-free, it also makes a striking coffee table.

Following the Viennese tradition of high quality design and excellent craftsmanship, stuben21’s collection sits beautifully in any environment, whether it be a home, hotel, restaurant or bar.

stuben21’s latest project involves creating a prototype for a stuben21:urban chalet. Peter and Nicole will design a London flat inside Oslo Court, a Grade II listed building on Prince Albert Road, St John’s Wood, reflecting their motivation to create spaces for living in that look equally at home in rural retreats or urban abodes. Refurbishment and redecoration is scheduled for Spring 2015.

Nicole Horn and Peter Daniel established stuben21, a concept lab and furniture company, in 2003. Both boast degrees in law and a lifelong passion for seeking the origins and transformations of traditional design concepts and forms and bringing them into the present.

With stuben21, Peter and Nicole have been able to realise their shared passion of getting down to the basics of tradition, reinterpreting it and presenting it in the best light for the future. In recent years stuben21 has internationally exhibited a number of conceptual works that are distinguished by an unconventional handling of traditional and never-before-seen design. The Viennese partners are designers who conceive and design spaces, develop functional concepts as well as events and network with like-minded people.
