New Makers' Conference concludes successful third edition

More than 70 furniture designer-makers enjoyed a day of learning and networking at the 2024 New Makers’ Conference in May, hosted by The Furniture Makers’ Company and luxury designer and maker, Artichoke.

Now in its third year, the New Makers’ Conference – sponsored by Artichoke, Axminster Tools and Halstock – took place on Friday 10th May at Wells Museum in Somerset.

The conference provides a unique platform for emerging designer-makers who are just starting out on their career to connect and network with established makers in the industry.

Renowned figures from the furniture design and making world attended the conference as guest speakers, among them: Donna Bellingham, CEO of Shackletons; Daisy Brunsdon, designer-maker, and TV tutor; Simon Burvill, founder of Gaze Burvill; Simon Elliott, MD of Halstock; Matt Estlea, designer-maker and YouTuber; Ben Lihou, MD of Artichoke; Dids Macdonald, CEO of Anti Copying in Design; Sarah Myerscough, gallery owner; and Edward Tadros, former chairman of Ercol.

The agenda covered a wide range of topics, including: Building a Sustainable and Viable Business and Brand; Navigating Gender Issues and Achieving Balance; and Embracing Sustainability.

David Dewing, chairman of The Furniture Makers’ Company’s South West Region, says: “The New Makers’ Conference continues to be a significant event for the furnituremaking community in the South West, fostering growth, innovation and collaboration among new and experienced makers alike. Our thanks to all the speakers and guests for joining us, and a special word of thanks to our event partner, Artichoke.”

Ben Lihou comments: “It was fantastic to speak on the day and explore the topic of sustainability. As one of the world’s great making brands, it is our responsibility to create pieces that are built to last and to set an industry benchmark to inspire others to do the same. A highlight was meeting so many young up-and-coming makers, and I’d like to thank the other inspiring speakers for generously giving their time.”
