Alstons, the long established sofa and chair manufacturer, will be purchased by East Anglian furniture retailer Glasswells on 8th October. The acquisition follows a decision by Alstons' previous owner TCM Living to strategically exit the UK market.
Under its new ownership, Alstons Furniture will continue to operate from its manufacturing facility in Colchester, ensuring continuity for its workforce, retail partners and supplier network, says Glasswells.
The union brings together two long-standing names in the British furniture industry – an award-winning manufacturer, and a retailer with eight decades of retail experience.
"We are incredibly proud to welcome Alstons into the Glasswells family," says Paul Glasswell, MD of Glasswells. "Alstons has built an exceptional reputation over the decades for manufacturing superb-quality sofas and chairs, backed by an unrivalled commitment to service. Having worked alongside Alstons as a retail partner for many years, we know the immense value of their brand, their British heritage, and the talent of their workforce. This investment represents our long-term commitment to supporting British manufacturing and ensuring Alstons continues to thrive for years to come."
The transition promises a seamless handover for stakeholders, he adds. Existing orders, retailer contracts and product warranties remain fully active, and daily operations promise to continue without disruption.
"As TCM Living makes its planned exit from the UK market, Glasswells provides an excellent foundation for Alstons’ continued success and growth,” says Andy Kennaugh, the CEO of Alstons. "Their 80-year family history of retail excellence gives them a profound understanding of what the consumer wants and how to support the independent retail network that Alstons proudly serves. This is a highly positive move that strengthens our business under British ownership, and we look forward to an exciting future."
