Sleepeezee cuts factory carbon emissions by almost half

As the world marks World Environment Day on Friday 5th June and its 2026 focus on climate action, British bed manufacturer Sleepeezee has revealed it has reduced absolute carbon emissions from its Rochester factory by 49.8% since 2018 – putting it years ahead of its own reduction targets.

Because turnover has grown by more than 60% over the same period – from £28m to over £46m – its carbon intensity (emissions per £m of turnover) has fallen even further, by 68.44%. With a 5% annual reduction target, both measures sit comfortably ahead of Sleepeezee’s reduction target.

Sleepeezee has also: sent zero waste to landfill since 2012; cut general waste by 7.51% last year through tighter segregation; and reduced gas and electricity use (kWh per £m of turnover) by 9% and 4% respectively compared to last year.

Sustainability is increasingly built into the products themselves. The springs in Sleepeezee mattresses contain, on average, 25% recycled material, and comfort layers incorporate recycled plastic.

Through the company’s take-back scheme, established with specialist recycling partners and widely used across the hospitality sector, between 50% and 93% of every returned mattress is recycled, with the small remainder converted to energy rather than sent to landfill.

Andrew Reene, health and safety and sustainability manager at Sleepeezee, says: “World Environment Day is a moment to be honest about progress, and we’re proud of how far the factory has come. Cutting our emissions by almost half while the business has grown shows that sustainability and quality manufacturing can go hand in hand.

“But this isn’t a finish line. We’re continuing to target YoY carbon reductions, designing more recycled content into our products, and making sure that when a mattress reaches the end of its life, as much of it as possible is given a second purpose.”

Beyond the factory floor, Sleepeezee has been developing biodiversity areas across its Rochester site. A small wildflower area has flourished and is being significantly expanded this year, alongside a bug hotel built from waste materials and other areas encouraging birds, bees and wildlife to the site.

Sleepeezee is also working towards Planet Mark certification for the eighth consecutive year, with the process now under way.
