As the UK edges towards its hottest year on record, bedmaker Sleepeezee has shared several practical sleep-saving tips for getting a good night's sleep.
Sleepeezee says consecutive 'tropical nights' – when the temperature never drops below 20°C – are building a sleep debt that could follow the country deep into the autumn.
Marketing director Amy Curtis says: “During a heatwave, sleep is usually the first thing to suffer, and that has a knock-on effect on everything from mood to concentration the next day. The good news is that a few simple changes to the bedroom and bedtime routine can make a real difference, even when the temperature outside is completely out of your control.
“Keeping the bedroom cool and well ventilated, using blackout blinds, and investing in a breathable, temperature-regulating sleep set-up all help the body do what it needs to do to switch off, even on the hottest nights.”
Sleepeezee's tips for surviving a heatwave include: ventilate in the evening once the outside air cools, and keep curtains or blinds closed during the day to block heat from building up; choose a cooling sleep surface and breathable bedding; block the light; shower before bed to remove pollen, dry bedding indoors on high-count days, and keep windows shut in the early morning and evening when pollen peaks; and try to hold bedtimes steady.
